Roger Keith Hutchings, age 75, passed away on Sunday, April 4th, from natural causes and the unkindness of Parkinson's disease. Roger graced the Theron and Vida Hutchings family with his presence on June 26, 1945. He was the fourth of 5 sons. He grew up on a farm and learned to work hard - a trait he passed on to his children. He loved his dog Spike, his horse Susie, and pulling a few shenanigans with his brothers.
At the ripe age of 14, Roger spied the lovely Carol Rasmussen, was quickly smitten and began his efforts to win her affection. After graduating from Bingham High School and serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States, Roger married his high school sweetheart in the Salt Lake Temple, then swept her off to Southern California where he was studying chiropractic. Shortly thereafter they began to build their family of 8 rather fantastic children.
Raising his family in both Utah and Northern California, Roger enjoyed adventuring with his family. Camping was a favorite, as were visits to beaches, river trips, and visits to nearby San Francisco where he always delighted the kids with a trip down the curvy street and the steepity street. Several trips to Utah through the years allowed the family to stay in close contact and build fun memories with extended family. With great bravery, he and Carol also took the family on three cross country trips, during which many historical sites were visited. These have all become cherished memories.
If you knew Roger, you knew that he worked very hard to provide for his family. Even when things were tough, he kept going. He was a man of “Good Timber.” He also worked hard in the service of others. On the John Deere tractor he cleared snow from many driveways, he helped with many moves, painted many houses, fixed several roofs, and got himself (and his family) wrangled into a large variety of work projects. Slowing down with age was frustrating to him, because he always wanted to help out, it was how he showed his love for others. He was a deeply patriotic man who loved his country, the constitution, and the American flag.
On Easter morning he left this world, his struggles, and his children behind to go be with Carol and his son Wade. Those still here to carry on the RKH family legacy are children Tonya (John), Eric (Stacey), Yvonne (Todd), Callis (Holly), Coreena (David), Laura (Randy), and Patrick, 31 grandchildren, and 16 and 8/9 great grandchildren.
Thank you to all who loved, befriended, cared for, or helped him during his 75 year sojourn here. A viewing will be held on Monday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 5927 S. Park Wood Dr. W., Kearns, UT. We’ll take some time to talk about him (aka the funeral) at 12 p.m. He will be laid to rest next to his sweetheart at the South Jordan City Cemetery. Flowers can be delivered to Goff Mortuary in Midvale.
