Carolyn Marie Lewis Tufts, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 6, 2022, in Draper, Utah.
Carolyn was born on February 17, 1928, in Ossining, New York, the oldest child of William R. and Hilda Knieriem Lewis. She had one younger brother, Bill. She graduated from Ossining High School in 1945 just as World War II was ending.
She attended Lasell Junior college and graduated with an associate degree in business in 1947. Having met the man of her dreams when she was only 15, she and her Larry had a long-distance courtship over 4 years, while Larry was at college and in the Navy. They were married on February 1, 1948. Their family was complete when Sherry was born in 1951 and Linda in 1954.
In 1962 they started their own business in the basement of their home. Carolyn’s business education was put to good use as she and Larry worked together, side by side for over 37 years. So much of their success was because of Carolyn who had a gift for making friends on the phone, and her great organizational and secretarial skills.
Carolyn lived by a daily creed. Start each day with a smile!!! It helped her as their business had its ups and downs and served her well as she dealt with the trials of getting older. She came from good German stock, who taught her to work hard when life gets hard. Carolyn was kind, loving, and a real beauty. She developed the talent for true gratitude and mastered it over the course of her life.
Her natural qualities of warmth and goodness were only added upon, when on March 7, 1970, at the age of 42, she was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by her husband. He had joined the church in 1967. They prepared together and were sealed for time and all eternity in the Washington DC temple on March 5, 1976.
In 1999, Carolyn and Larry were called to a full-time mission to the Canada Halifax Mission. They were assigned to Newfoundland where Carolyn served as Relief Society President, and Larry the Branch president of the Bay Roberts branch. They loved the people of Newfoundland and found great happiness as they served their mission together.
Carolyn became Grammy to a growing posterity. Her 8 grandchildren gave her life meaning and were a source of great joy for her. She found creative ways to stay connected. There were family vacations, lots of letters, and her annual “Western Union” telephone calls with her singing happy birthday via phone.
In 2003, at the age of 75, Carolyn and Larry, lifelong New Yorkers, pulled up their roots and moved to Utah to be close to their daughters and growing posterity. She adored each and every spouse who married into the family. Their move provided lots of family time together and an ever deepening of the great bond of love that was Carolyn’s signature. Her arms and heart were filled to overflowing as 29 precious great grandchildren were born and she was close enough now to be their beloved Grammy.
Even though moving from New York meant leaving behind dear relatives and lifelong friends, Carolyn made the move with the grace and poise that characterized her life. She has always been one “classy” lady! Wonderful new friends filled her cup to overflowing in her Utah neighborhood. She always said moving to Utah was exactly what she needed.
And she was exactly what we all needed. Carolyn has filled our lives with so much love and has been such an example of how to live with faith in Jesus Christ, and to truly rely on our Heavenly Father and trust in His love. Her legacy of “loving with your whole heart” blessed all who knew her.
Funeral Services for Carolyn will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at the Draper 2nd Ward chapel, 1617 East 12700 South in Draper, Utah. The viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m., with the funeral service following at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation to the Humanitarian Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
