Glen Armond Mitchell
Glen Armond Mitchell passed away peacefully on September 9, 2022, surrounded by his family at the age of 95. He was born in Bingham Canyon to Alfred Preston Mitchell and Sarah Ann Alida Justesen on March 26, 1927. His father was a miner, which meant several moves during his childhood, including a memorable few years in Spring City, Utah with his grandparents, uncles and cousins. About the time of middle school, the family moved to Riverton, Utah.
After graduating from Jordan High School, Glen enlisted in the US Navy Reserve. He trained as a radio operator and was stationed in Japan and San Diego until a few months after the war ended. His sister Betty had encouraged him to write to Mary Green during his service and upon his return, they began courting. They were married June 10, 1948 in the Salt Lake City Temple.
Glen attended the University of Utah, studying math. During these college years, he and Mary expected and lost their first child, Michael G. Mitchell. Shortly after this loss and Glen’s graduation, he was called to full-time missionary service in the Central Atlantic States Mission. This joint sacrifice meant both Glen and the family car went back east for three years. After finishing his missionary service, he returned confident that teaching the gospel was a viable career. This led him to pursue a Master’s Degree in Church History and Doctrine from Brigham Young University (BYU). He taught in the CES Seminary Program for over 30 years and worked in many different administrative capacities.
He loved camping, hunting, riding motorcycles and studying the gospel. He was very patriotic and felt a deep connection to the flag and the ideals and opportunities of America.
Through the years, Glen continued as a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in various capacities such as Bishop, Stake President, Patriarch and Jordan River Temple Sealer. He had the privilege of sealing many of his grandchildren to their spouses and gave patriarchal blessings to many of his posterity.
Glen spent the bulk of his later years caring for Mary as her health declined. After her death in June 2010, he was able to spend more and more time with his family, traveling and celebrating life with them. His family now celebrates Glen and Mary’s reunion and the legacy of service and sacrifice they left with us.
Glen was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents and siblings Betty Mitchell Hansen and Marlin Mitchell, a son, Michael, and great -grandson, Eli Mitchell. He is survived by his children, Glendon (Toni) Mitchell, Charlotte (Randy) Meldrum, and Garth (Shauna) Mitchell, as well as 9 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 6-8 pm at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street, Midvale.
On Saturday, September 17, 2022, the family will meet at 10:00 am for a private viewing and family prayer. This will be followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am at the Mount Jordan 3rd Ward Building, 8950 South 400 East Sandy, UT. Interment at Riverton City Cemetery.
