Olive Carol Boren Masich

Olive Carol Boren Masich peacefully passed away into the arms of her loving husband, Steve R. Masich, on October 3, 2022. Carol was born on September 20, 1927 to Gilbert Reed and Olive McBride Boren in Helper, Utah. At the age of 22 months she lost her hearing as a result of paralysis caused by Diphtheria. She graduated from the Gooding School for the Deaf and Burley High School. She went on to graduate from Gallaudet College (University).

In the summer of 1950 she met the love of her life, Steve Rade Masich. It was love at first sight. Carol had already committed to teach school for one year in Olathe, Kansas. She fulfilled that commitment and upon her return home, she married Steve on July 9, 1951. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They had 5 beautiful girls.

She was very active in her ward. She was the 4th Relief Society president of the Salt Lake City Deaf branch. She served in a variety of callings within the 1st and 2nd Salt Lake Valley Deaf wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was instrumental in creating a book of sign language terms used by sign language interpreters within the Church.

She was an excellent seamstress. She made over 200 “Cabbage Patch” dolls, carefully handcrafting their hair and painting each face by hand. For her efforts she won 2 blue ribbons at the Utah State Fair and brought joy to those lucky enough to receive one. She also crafted a variety of stuffed animals. She created many lovely Christmas decorations. Carol was an excellent cook. Her cooking was always in high demand. She brought much enjoyment to any meal with her expert skill. Her library of cookbooks was unrivaled.

She is survived by her brother Robert Boren, her 5 daughters, Maureen (Clair) Masich, Kathleen Ann Masich, Melodee Williams, Karen (Delbert) Swensen and Stephanie (Larry) Wade. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Olive, brothers Richard G. and Bruce C. Boren, granddaughter Amy Williams, grandson Steven Mark Williams and her lovable husband, Steve.
