Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Blaine Hyrum Hardcastle peacefully passed on to the next life on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, ending his 96 years on earth.
Blaine was born on January 10, 1930 in Murray, Utah, to Ellen Selma Hyde Hardcastle and William Hyrum Hardcastle. He was the eldest of their four sons who as boys learned to work as they helped their father with his small dairy farm in Crescent. Always a farmer at heart, Blaine loved nurturing his peach trees, grape vines and flowers at his own home through the years.
After graduation from Jordan High School he went on to serve in what was then called the Brazilian Mission from 1950-1952. At that time the mission included the entire country of Brazil. Just a few months after returning from South America, Blaine entered the Army and served with what were still called occupation forces in Germany as a communications specialist. He was able to see much of Europe whenever he had leave.
Blaine’s service with the 14th Armored Calvary ended in 1955 and he began taking classes at Salt Lake Technical College where he learned construction and cabinet making. These were skills that he would use throughout his life in his home and helping others. He also created countless wooden toys for his posterity over the years.
On New Year’s Eve in 1955 he would meet his sweetheart, Larna Louder, on a blind date. He always liked to say that it was a date that had lasted for 70 years now. They were married on October 10, 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple and would go on to add five children to their family. For the past 60 years Blaine and Larna have lived in the same home in Sandy.
Blaine was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a man of firm and lasting faith. What may have been his favorite church service was being scoutmaster in his ward for many years, influencing the lives of young men who still remember Blaine for being one of the greatest men they’ve ever known. He also served as a bishop, high councilor, stake executive secretary, a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple Baptistry, and for many years he and Larna served as guides at the Conference Center in Salt Lake. They also served as CES missionaries in the Romania Bucharest Mission.
For 30 years Blaine worked for the United States Postal Service, walking miles and miles over those years, or driving the streets of Sandy in his mail truck to deliver mail to those who looked forward to seeing his friendly face each day. After retiring, he and Larna had time to do some traveling, make memories with their children and grandchildren, and Blaine could spend more time in his wood shop creating.
One of his favorite things to do was to spend time camping and fishing in the Uinta Mountains, which he enjoyed for decades. Blaine was always teaching either a child or grandchild how to fish, often spending more time baiting their hooks than casting in a line with his own rod and reel.
One of the hardest things for Blaine in his last years was having a spirit that wanted to be up and doing, serving others as he had always done, but having a body that was wearing down, unable to keep up with the young man that he still was inside. His family wants to express their special thanks to Kanani, Kaitlyn, Camille, Kelly and Brian for their caring and kindness for Blaine over the past year and a half.
There was no man who loved his family more and was loved in return by them. Blaine is survived by his beloved companion, Larna Louder Hardcastle; children, Laurie and Karl Seil, Val and Renae Hardcastle, Heidi and Mark Wigren, Ben and Julie Hardcastle, Mont and Carla Hardcastle; 16 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. All of his family are so very grateful for all the time that we had with him.
