Bruce Lawrence Black

Beloved husband and father, Bruce Lawrence Black passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, surrounded by his family. Bruce was born November 30, 1939, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to wonderful parents, Lawrence Lorenzo and Lucille Barton Black who have preceded him in death. He is survived by a loving sister, Judith Pack (Brenton). Bruce graduated from South High School in Salt Lake, where he played football, wrestled, and ran track. He was also heavily involved in music, singing in mixed choirs, an acapella group, and the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir. Bruce received a football scholarship to Westminster College, where he played his freshman year. He then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northwestern States Mission from 1960-1962.

Bruce came home from his mission and moved on to his next adventure as he met the love of his life, Evelyn Salter Black, who preceded him in death two months ago. They were married in the St. George Temple on September 7, 1963, and will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary together in heaven. Bruce graduated from Weber State University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and business with a minor in Political Science. Bruce had a wonderful career working for the State of Utah for over 30 years in the Office of Recovery Services. He and the teams he managed were able to recover child support helping families in need.

Bruce was a fabulous father to four children, Kimberly Eager (Drew), Katrina McRae (Lisa), Bruce Lance Black (Rachel), and Maralee Samowitz (Bret). Goodhearted grandfather to Ben (Becca), Nikki (Chandler), Jessica (Jeff), Alex (David), Samantha, Eithen (Stephanie), Allie (Eli), Aliya, Jocelynn, Cameron, David, and Brandon. Gracious great-grandfather to Zoe, Elora, and Raelyn.

Bruce left a legacy of love, hard work, and dedication to the Savior. He loved singing, gardening, sports, BBQs, attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and school events. Bruce served in a wide range of local and stake assignments for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including service missions and in Boy Scouts of America. He earned the distinguished Silver Beaver award in the scouting program. Bruce kept serving until the day he passed away. He was optimistic, kind-hearted, and loved dearly. He always saw the good in others. He declared his greatest treasure was his family and his testimony of Jesus Christ.
