Charles Edwin “Chuck” Johnson

Charles Edwin “Chuck” Johnson, age 76, passed away on April 20, 2026.

Chuck was born in Tooele, Utah, the youngest of four children, to Alexander Pharis and Clarice McLaws Johnson. Growing up in Utah, he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors and the quiet beauty of the West. He attended both Utah State University and the University of Utah—experiences that helped shape his curiosity and appreciation for learning and the world around him.

Chuck built a respected career with the Third District Court, ultimately serving as Chief Deputy Clerk of Salt Lake County. He was deeply respected by the judges and attorneys he worked alongside for his integrity, knowledge, and steady presence. His work reflected the same qualities that defined his life—dedication, thoughtfulness, and quiet strength.

Outside of his career, Chuck found joy in the things he loved most. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and had a passion for arrowhead hunting, even participating in archaeological digs through the University of Utah. He cherished time spent in the Uinta Mountains, the West Desert and Southern Utah, places where he felt most at peace. He was also a devoted listener of public radio and kept himself well informed on current events, always curious and engaged with the world.

Chuck had a gentle, friendly nature that drew people to him. Though he could be shy and sometimes reclusive, he had a unique ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, and those who met him quickly came to appreciate his warmth and authenticity. He was an excellent listener and was always only a phone call away, offering his time, attention, and support to those who needed it. He was also a true lover of animals, showing kindness and compassion to all living things.

Chuck was married twice, and even as life took different paths, he maintained caring and respectful relationships with both partners.

Above all, Chuck’s greatest love was his family. His seven children and twenty-three grandchildren were his whole world, and he took immense pride in each of them. He was always there to babysit or help however he could. He took great pleasure in spending time with them and truly connected with each and every one.

He is survived by his children: Nicole (Justin), Allison (Jon), Jordan, Brady (Meredith), Lindsey (King), Riley (Brittany), and Ammie (Paul), along with his beloved grandchildren and his siblings, Christine (Ray) Gentry, and Alex (Louise) Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pharis and Clarice, and his sister, Florence.

Chuck will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of a gentle spirit, curiosity, and deep love for his family will live on.

There will be no formal funeral services per Chuck’s request.
