Claude Wayne Newman

Claude Wayne Newman, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on February 17, 2026 at his home in South Jordan, Utah. Claude was blessed to have his beautiful wife Jeanine and children at his side. Prior to his sudden illness, Claude and Jeanine resided in West Valley City for the past 20 years.

Claude was born on October 26, 1935, to Rulon Marchant Newman and Winifred Dinah Eleanor Rudd. He was the third child of seven children. Claude was raised on a farm in Shelton Idaho with cows, chickens, pigs, and horses. He attended grade school at Buck Elementary, Ucon Junior High, and graduated from Bonneville High School in 1954.

He attended Idaho State College trade school in Pocatello Idaho in the auto mechanics program. In his second year at Idaho State, he attended a rush party for the Lambda Delta Sigma fraternity. There he met his sweetheart Jeanine Lewis when she asked him to skate. He said “the desire to have her be my wife was there right away.”

Jesus Christ was always central in Claude’s life. After school, Claude was called to the Northern Far East mission in 1956. He discussed his desire to serve his Savior with Jeanine and she agreed to wait to get married. He entered the mission home in Salt Lake City in June 1956 while he waited on a train to San Francisco. From San Francisco, he caught a ship to Tokyo, Japan. Upon his arrival, Claude was sent to Seoul Korea to assist in the newly formed area of the mission. He learned Korean from the help of the people and the Lord. He served faithful for 3 years and arrived home in August 1959. Claude and Jeanine were married for eternity in the Idaho Falls, Idaho temple on October 15, 1959.

In January 1960, Claude joined the Army and attended basic training in Fort Ord, California. In early 1962, Claude was activated and sent to Fort Lewis Washington for the period of 10 months. Claude’s little family had grown to 4 by then. His first child arrived in August of 1960 and the second in September of 1961. Claude and Jeanine had a total of 7 children join their little family.

Claude worked as a farm hand, a clerk in the Bonneville County Assessor office and later worked for Yost Office systems in the service department servicing office machines. He later became service manager. Claude and Jeanine moved to Utah in 1990 when Yost sold to Ikon Office Solutions and he worked with them until he retired in 2001.

Claude and Jeanine served a senior couple mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Florida Tallahassee Mission for 18 months from 2001-2003. Claude held many callings within the church and also served in the Jordan River Utah temple for many years. He recently served in the Taylorsville Utah temple.

Claude tried “retirement” for a while but was never one to rest. If you asked him his favorite hobby, he said “anything with Jeanine.” His other favorite hobby was “work.” Claude loved to fix things. He had a very mechanical mind and loved to build. He made many things with wood and used his skills to enhance his home. Claude always had a project going.

Claude and Jeanine served as campground hosts for several years at Spruce’s campground in Big Cottonwood Canyon. To Claude, “a bad day in the mountains was better than a good day in the valley.” Up until his sudden illness, he worked for Enterprise.

Claude celebrated his 90th birthday in October of 2026 and his 66th wedding anniversary by cruising through the Panama Canal with his sweetheart. He later was “King for a day” and hosted family, extended family and friends at his birthday bash.

Claude was preceded in death by his parents, brother RJ Newman, sister Rosaline Chandler, brother Dennis G. Newman and son in law Mark Staples. Claude is survived by his best friend and wife, Jeanine Lewis Newman, daughter Marla D. Haight (Richard), son Curtis C. Newman (Teresa), son David L. Newman (Josh), daughter Dona L. Staples, daughter Deborah S. Nobles (Rick), daughter Brenda J. Caudill (Brent) and son Randall W. Newman (Drueanna), 26 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, sister Ann Yearsley, brother David B. Newman and brother Danny K Newman.

The family would like to thank the VA Hospital medical team, the lovely Dr. Zhu, and the fabulous Applegate Hospice team.
