David L. Smeltzer

David Lynnwood Smeltzer passed away on September 22, 2026 at the age of 73 years old. He passed peacefully and painlessly at home surrounded by family.

David was born on January 23, 1953 in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Mary Elizabeth Smeltzer and Theodore Smeltzer. There, he spent his childhood and young adult years. After graduating high school, he moved across the country to Provo, Utah to attend college at Brigham Young University. In March 1975, he met bride-to-be, Victoria Millar. Six months later, they were married in the Provo Community Church on September 26, 1975, then later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity on September 26, 1978. They began to raise their family in Sandy, Utah where they remained happily married for 46 years. Victoria passed away on January 19, 2021. They are now celebrating their 51st anniversary in Heaven together, joined by one of their sons, Aaron, who passed away on May 30, 2014.

Together, they raised eight children, four sons and four daughters. As their family grew, they enjoyed spending time with their 11 grandchildren. David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished family gatherings, and his presence at holidays and celebrations brought warmth and joy to those around him. He enjoyed many hobbies and passions such as playing guitar, singing loudly to his favorite songs, playing golf, building model trains sets, and watching his favorite sports teams, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had a passion for living his healthiest life and enjoyed working for USANA Health Sciences for 28 years.

David was born with a rare genetic disorder called Oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD). Over the years, he endured a myriad of health struggles and challenges related to ODDD. Throughout it all, he remained positive and turned his struggles into his strengths. He made a strong effort to share his health journey to inspire others to never give up. Despite his disabilities, he was the perfect example of perseverance and grit in the face of what seemed to be insurmountable challenges. He taught us all to not let obstacles keep you from doing what makes you happy.

His faith was strong in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His faith journey started at age 13 when two LDS missionaries came to speak at his local Evangelical church. There, he was introduced to the Book of Mormon and decided he wanted to attend BYU. While living in Provo, he joined a Protestant Christian-folk band called the Allelu Singers. David wrote his own songs, played guitar, and sang songs of worship. After he married Victoria, he strongly felt the Spirit telling him that he should be baptized. As a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he bore his testimony often and remained steadfast in his faith throughout his life.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, October 2, 2026 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1380 W. 6785 S. West Jordan, UT 84084. An open casket viewing and visitations will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. MST. Then, the funeral service will be in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. MST with Bishop Tyson Beaman conducting. Following the funeral service, we will proceed to the burial service at Sandy City Cemetery, 700 E. 9000 S. Sandy, UT 84070.
