DeLane “Hutch” Hutcheon

DeLane “Hutch” Hutcheon passed away on August 23, 2026, just three days shy of his 85th birthday.

Hutch was born August 26, 1941, in Roosevelt, Utah, to Arthur and Ada Hutcheon. He spent his early years in Neola, Utah before moving to Salt Lake City when he was eight. He graduated from South High School and went on to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Utah.

As a young man, Hutch served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North Mexico Mission. He loved speaking Spanish to anyone he could, even in his last few weeks. After returning from his mission, he attended the University of Utah, where he met Becky. The two were married on July 16, 1971, beginning a life together centered around family, faith and the many adventures that came along the way.

His faith and service remained an important part of his life. Hutch served in many Church callings over the years, but his favorite may have been one of the simplest—teaching Primary. He loved the kids, and they loved him right back. He also spent many years playing and coaching Church basketball, something that brought out both his competitive side and his love of being around people.

Hutch was fiercely loyal to his family. He was proud of the Hutcheon name, proud of his Scottish heritage and, more than anything, proud of his children and grandchildren. Being Grandpa Hutchie was one of the great joys of his life.

He was also, unquestionably, the tool man.

Hutch loved tools. He sold them, collected them and traded them, earning a reputation as a tool trader extraordinaire. He rarely met a tool he couldn’t find a use for—or an old part, piece of equipment or miscellaneous object that he thought should be thrown away. To Hutch, throwing something away simply meant you hadn’t yet figured out what you might need it for.

That philosophy served him well at the farm, one of his favorite places to be. Hutch could spend hours “puttering” around, working on one project or another, tilling gardens with his tractor and adding to his ever-growing collection of tractor implements. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was happiest outdoors with something to do, something to fix or something to tinker with.

For many years, Hutch was also proud to be the OG Red Shirt Cowboy, working the Draper Days Rodeo with family and friends. He loved the rodeo, but even more, he loved the people, friendships and traditions surrounding it. Thank you Fred and Katie.

Hutch had a mischievous streak that stayed with him throughout his life. He loved to tease, and a perfectly normal family gathering could turn into a water fight with little warning if Hutch was nearby. He was usually the instigator.

Then there were the mint Life Savers. If Hutch was wearing a suit, chances were good there were Life Savers in his pocket, especially for the grandchildren and kids who knew where to find them. It was a small thing, but one of those small things that became unmistakably his.

During retirement, he developed a love for Deseret Industries. He was always visiting every DI he came across, looking for whatever looked like a good deal. You never knew when he was gonna show up at your house with his latest find.

He worked hard, served faithfully, laughed easily and left his family with a lifetime of stories that will continue to be told—and probably more than a few tools and tractor implements that no one is quite sure what to do with.

We thank mom for taking such good care of him during his final months, and we acknowledge and appreciate the countless people who helped provide assistance during this time.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Anderson & Goff Mortuary (11859 South 700 East, Draper). A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026 at Neola Cemetery (10000 N. 2500 W, Neola) at 1pm.
