Our dear father Delmer Max Lawrence 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 8, 2025 after a courageous battle with the effects of congestive heart failure.
Though we will desperately miss him, we are grateful for our Heavenly Father’s Plan and recognize dad has returned home to those loved ones who have preceded him in death; his loving wife, Conni Lawrence, parents Joseph and Mildred Lawrence, brothers John and Raynor Lawrence, his sister Jacklin and her husband Richard McGuire, and his son in law Steve Reese.
Max was born on December 20, 1928 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Dad fondly remembers his childhood growing up in the Heber Valley. He had a demanding childhood helping his parents run the family business, “Lawrence Floral” on Main Street. It was at the Floral shop that Grandpa Joe instilled in Max the value of hard work, to work first play later, and earn an honest wage. Memories of growing up in such an ideal time held a special place in his heart that lasted his whole life.
Max graduated from Wasatch High School in 1946 and went on to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New England States Mission. It was on his mission that he truly gained his strength of knowledge and testimony of the Gospel after having many faith promoting experiences.
Upon returning from his mission, Max enlisted in the Air Force where he served our Country for four years. Two of those years were on Kyushu Island, Japan during the Korean War. After his military service Max felt it was time to finish his education. He received his Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Utah and his Bachelor’s Degree from BYU, and even renewed his teaching certificate at USU. Dad always joked that he could cheer for any team in Utah without being disloyal to his Alma Mater. He was an alumni of all of them! He taught Elementary Education for several years before he became a School Principal for the Granite School District.
While trying to finish his education, Max met a Danish Doll named Conni Christensen at a family dinner in Roosevelt, Utah. It wasn’t long before he made her his eternal sweetheart and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on October 28, 1954. It seemed in the blink of an eye they had quite a posterity beginning with four daughters. Jane and Dennis Heaton, Judy and Roger Petrea, Joni and Steve Reese, Jeri and Brad Gilchrist. 4 Daughters, 4 Spouses, 18 Grandchildren 12 Spouses, 49 Great Grand Children, 3 Great Great Grandchildren.
Max served others in many capacities throughout his life. He was there with a listening ear. He could help mend a fence, broken heart, or a misunderstood conversation. He’d help give another a meal, ride, loan, groceries, or the shirt off his back. He could make you laugh, ponder, or make you the best homemade hashbrowns. He would do anything for anyone if he was able.
He had many church callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but his favorite pleasure was teaching the Gospel Doctrine class and Ushering at Temple square for the Tabernacle Choir performances. His wife Conni sang in the Choir and he would Usher while she sang.
The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Hospice group for helping us get through this most difficult time and to all the wonderful doctors and nurses who cared for our dad over the years. We couldn’t have hoped for better.
We can’t begin to express how much we will miss our dad. We are so grateful y to know that Families can be together forever and that we will all be together again someday. Until then, we are so happy to know that Dad is reunited with our sweet mother Conni, whom he has missed more than words can say. ‘Til we meet again, dad, you’re in our hearts and thoughts and we love you.
