Doris Bullock Sanderson passed on Thursday, September 19, 2024. She is survived by her daughter, Sheri Montgomery, and her son, Mark Sanderson, and their families. Doris is preceded in death by her beloved husband James Sanderson.
Doris was raised in Lark, Utah, a small mining town southwest of Salt Lake. Doris’ parents, Vergia and Frank Bullock doted on her, especially her father who made sure that Doris had everything her heart desired. Doris grew into a beautiful young lady capturing the attention of many in her high school class, including Jim Sanderson. Both playing in the Jordan High School band, Jim convinced Doris to date him, and they quickly fell in love and were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1951.
When the Korean War began, Doris husband Jim and his brother-in-law, Bert Elg, joined the National Guard. Together with their wives, Doris and Maxine Elg, they spent a brief time stationed in Clovis, New Mexico being able to stay stateside. Upon returning to Utah, they rejoined Jim’s other sister Jean and her husband Charlie Greenwood. The six of them spent many good times as best friends camping, traveling all over the world, playing games and tricks on each other throughout many years. What a joy it must be for the six to finally be reunited!
Unable to have their own children, Doris and Jim adopted Sheri in 1958 and Mark in 1962. The four were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple a few years later. Jim’s college financial aid and scholarships career began at the University of Utah in Salt Lake. Jim then took a directorship with the College Board western region located in Norther California in 1971. Doris remained a stay-at-home mother only briefly working as a teller at a local credit union when her children were older. After 14 years Doris and Jim were happy to take an early retirement and return home to Utah.
Doris was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed serving in various capacities including Primary, Young Women, Relief Society and as a Gospel Doctrine teacher. She spent many hours studying and pondering the scriptures so she would be prepared for her class. This, incidentally was way out of her comfort zone and showed her devotion to her religion. She and Jim also served two missions-one an inner-city mission and another teaching English to workers at Deseret Manufacturing.
Doris was always devoted to her family. During the time since her husband Jim passed Doris had longed to be with Jim again. On September 19, 2014, Doris got to go home to be reunited with Jim and other loved ones. She is at peace and enjoying her family reunion on the other side. Sheri and Mark wish to thank the numerous family and friends, especially caregivers in the final months, who have loved and supported Doris and us through the good and the hard times.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 23rd at 10:00 AM at Sandy City Cemetery, 9000 South 700 East, Sandy.
