Esther L. Schmidt

Esther Schmidt left us on June 16, 2026, but she left all who knew her better off, thanks to her generous heart, quick wit, and steadfast faith in Christ, while climbing mountains of adversity. Diagnosed with MS in 1981, she endured this cruel disease the rest of her life. Other physical and emotional challenges would follow, including her going mostly blind in her final few years.

Yet for as long she was able, she taught by example that you serve God by serving His children. Among many other callings, she served selflessly as a longtime, beloved Relief Society president in the old Cottonwood 3rd Ward. She also served diligently as a Primary president, a temple worker for 12 years, and for seven years as an LDS Family History missionary. Even in her latest years, until her eyes could no longer hold pace with her, she loved indexing. Through it all, she somehow still made sure you were remembered on your birthday and other special days.

Born the oldest of six children on Aug. 25, 1937, in SLC, Esther always strived to be a good daughter, and set a fine example for her younger siblings.

On Oct. 10, 1957, in the Salt Lake Temple, she married Rowen Schmidt, who made her dreams of being a wife and mother come true as they would be blessed with five beautiful children who brought laughter, music and joy to their home for 68 glorious years.

Their beautiful family tree of seven has since blossomed to include 21 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Esther and Rowen’s fun side included their love of planning and carrying out family gatherings of all kinds, especially full-on reunions, hikes, barbecues, and July 4 canyon breakfast cookouts.

Survived by devoted husband Rowen Schmidt, children: Shauna (Wayne) Springer, RoAnn (Randy) Rupp, Cindy (Kipp) Smith, Jenny (Jeff) Straley, and Dean (Angelia) Schmidt.

Preceded in death by: parents Paul and Eva Lehmann, great-granddaughters Madison Sessions and Emma Drake, and niece Heidi Skinner. Her younger brother, Lynn Lehmann, followed her in death shortly after her passing.

A viewing and funeral will be held Monday, June 29, at the Eaglebrook Ward, 8060 S 615 East, Midvale, Utah. Viewing from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm, and funeral at 1:00 pm, followed immediately by a graveside service at Midvale City Cemetery, 471 6th Ave., Midvale, Utah. Funeral Services provided by Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State St. Midvale, Utah 84047.

In honor of Esther, do something kind for someone today, and every day, for as long as you’re able.
