Gary Eugene Hendy passed away on January 22nd, 2026 at home with family.
Gary was born on July 31st, 1936 in Farmington, Illinois to Frank and Lois Hendy. He was raised by his aunt and grandmother in Glendale, California. He attended Glendale High School and was a proud “Dynamiter” where he excelled in Track. After graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps earning the rank of Corporal. He enjoyed joking that he was lightest man in his platoon and for that he was assigned as the BAR gunner, though his primary duties were as a mechanic keeping the platoon’s vehicles operational. He remained a proud Marine throughout his life.
On August 11th, 1956 he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Donna Rae Hartley. They were inseparable through 66 years of marriage until Donna’s passing in 2022. Together they loved making a home and experiences for their three children, exploring their family history and hiking in Idaho, wintering in Yuma, Arizona in their camper, assisting in the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival, trout fishing, making snowmen, visiting the national parks, and especially creating wonderful Christmases for their family.
Like many people of his generation Gary did not attend college, but he was gifted with a brilliant, sharp mind and the love of learning. If he wanted to do something he found the resources to learn that skill on his own and apply it with great success. He personally constructed, plumbed, electrified and finished an addition to the house that he and Donna shared in Cedar Pines Park, CA which tripled its size. He was a gifted mechanic, woodworker, home handyman and loved filming his family’s adventures on his Super 8 video cameras.
In 2024 he was blessed to find and marry Kwan Brown. Kwan reignited his life and engaged his enjoyment of leaning about other cultures. Together they explored the local area of Utah and enjoyed walks, soaking in hot springs, and the beautiful mountains. Kwan made his final years happy and loving.
Gary is survived by his wife Kwan, his children with Donna, Rick (Susan) Hendy, Debbie (Bob) Spain, Ted (Nhung) Hendy, eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
A small graveside service for family and friends will be held on Thursday, 29 January 2026 at 1:30 pm at the Sandy City Cemetery, 9000 South 700 East, Sandy, UT.
