Harvey Edward Pulley, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. He was the fourth child of Orion Sylvester and Fonda Rigby Pulley born on the kitchen table January 9, 1939, in Logan, Utah. He grew up in Logan and in his teenage years, became an entrepreneur delivering the Herald Journal and provided treats for his brothers while working at the Royal Bakery. He worked for his Uncle Truman Rigby on his farm and later worked for Bud Lloyd on his cattle ranch just outside Montpelier, Idaho. The side benefit of this job was meeting the love of his life, Dixie Lloyd. He was 14 years old, and she was 12 years old when they met. Years later, they were married on July 17, 1959, in the Logan, LDS temple.
He was a man of many gifts and talents. He was firmly committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and had a deep love for the Savior and his fellow man. He was grateful for the opportunity to serve in the temple for 35 years and as a weekly patron for the last 10 months. Harvey served in many callings throughout his life. He loved serving as a Bishop and Branch President, ministering to each person in a very personal way. He loves people, especially little children. If you think you are his favorite, you probably are.
He loved guns and was an excellent sharp-shooter and marksman, shooting on the Utah State ROTC Rifle team and in other competitions where he won numerous awards. Harvey enlisted in the US Army on his seventeenth birthday. He was a patriot that loved the Constitution of the United States and understood the importance of freedom and agency.
He was a master craftsman with the ability to build or repair just about anything. He started his own precision machine shop in 1965, Pulley’s Custom Manufacturing, which is the oldest manufacturing company in West Jordan.
He was patient, kind, non-judgmental and accepted everyone as a valued, loved, and important person. He gave freely and shared everything he had with those who needed it.
Harvey was Vice President of the Jordan Education Foundation. In an article Harvey was quoted by saying, “young people are the hope of tomorrow.” He encouraged everyone to take a keen interest in the lives of young people and help them prepare for life, in a demanding high-tech world.
He taught the principles of the gospel, service, and hard work to his children by the example he set not by the sermons he preached. He loved his wife and his life with her. They had sixty-four happy years together and an eternity ahead. Three pieces of advice we will always remember, “Do the best you can Mary,” “You don’t have to, you get to”, and “Make it a good day”.
Harvey is survived by his wife Dixie, daughters, Lisa Cook (Allan) Sandra Hill (Doug) DeAnn Backus (Boyd) Julie Taylor-Birt (Steve) Marylynn Buonocore (Nick) and sons, Jason Pulley, Jeffrey Pulley (Melanie) and five additional children that were added to the family through the Indian Placement Program. Calvin Jim, Beverly Arviso (Orville) Gidget Begay (Emmerson) Priscilla Beaver and Tina Morgan. He leaves 25 cherished grandchildren and 22 adored great-grandchildren. Along with brothers Arden (Carole), Karl (Virginia), Stephen (Cynthia), sisters Adrynne Muir, and Camille Crookston (Mark).
We will miss his golden smile, his warm and witty ways, his optimistic attitude, and zeal for life.
