Howard Dell Sperry, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away July 18, 2023 due to complications from heart disease. Howard was born in Nephi, Utah on October 1, 1943 to William Dell and Jacketta Small Brough Sperry. He graduated from Juab High School and attended Utah State University. He then joined the Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Howard worked with the United States Postal Service for over forty years before his retirement. He made friendships that would last a lifetime.
Howard was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a talented woodworker and spent many happy hours making things for his family. While still in high school, he made a beautiful set of kitchen cabinets. They are lovely and still in use today.
Howard was always well-liked by his friends and neighbors, and he loved them as well. He was known for his quick wit and was innately kind, generous and caring. He exemplified those qualities throughout his life. He spent his youth helping his father on the ranch in Nephi, along with riding his horse Hayden. He loved to read and enjoyed learning about the Civil War. Western novels were also one of his favorites. He loved to explore remote areas and ghost towns throughout Utah. After Vietnam, he returned home to lead a life of quietly helping anyone in need. Howard was extremely thoughtful, never forgot a birthday and always sent the funniest holiday cards. He was also a wonderful listener. If anyone needed a tool for something they were working on, Howard had it. He was much loved by family, and for years took tender care of his elderly mother. Howard loved to grab a burger and always made sure that his dog Buddy got one too. Buddy was a very faithful companion to Howard. It was always a treat to have Howard visit and everyone looked forward to it. He would always bring a big box of See’s chocolates and many delicious treats. He was also a great cook and made wonderful chili, his own recipe. Howard also enjoyed hunting and fishing with neighbors and friends. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sister, Linda K. Sperry Pearson; David Pearson, nephew; Christine Pearson, niece; Steven Pearson, nephew. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Stewart Pearson.
