Jack Richard Shields

March 4, 1938 — January 23, 2024

Jack Richard Shields

Jack Richard Shields was born March 4, 1938, in Murray, Utah to Richard W. Shields and Iona Goff Shields. He passed away on January 23, 2024.

He grew up in South Jordan, UT, and graduated from Jordan High School.

He worked hard all his life. He began working in his father’s service station in West Jordan when he was 14 years old.

He married Janice Wilson, later divorced and married Linda Schouten for over 42 years.

He started working for Salt Lake County Fire Dept., working as their master mechanic for 9 years. He worked his way up through the ranks where he retired as Battalion Chief after 30 years of service.

He had many interests. He enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, and snowmobiling. He loved pheasant hunting and re-telling stories of hunting with his dad and dogs. He always had a hunting dog. He loved trap shooting and won many awards for his shooting skills.

He had a passion for repairing or restoring just about anything that had wheels. This included old cars, back hoes, road grater, motor home and a fire truck that took him 2 years to complete. The parts were scattered all over the backyard and patio which about drove is wife Linda crazy!

If you ever walked into his garage it appeared to be total chaos, but he always knew where everything was. If you asked for any item he could go straight to it. If there was ever anything missing, he would notice right away.

He always had to have a project going and was always working on something.

He enjoyed spending summers at the cabin in Woodland, UT. and winters in Yuma, AZ. for many years.

He wasn’t an easy person to get to know. He had a rough, tough exterior. If you worked at it, you’d figure out he was a really a marshmallow inside.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Colleen Harper.

He is survived by his wife Linda, sons Val Shields, Gary (Nicole) Shields, Jeff (Shilo) Shields, daughter Connie (Russ) Morgan, stepsons Greg (Marcelle) Maxfield, David (Teri) Maxfield, stepdaughter Debbie (Rob) King. 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren with one on the way, and 2 great-great grandchildren. 3 brothers-in-law Greg Harper, Sherrill Schouten, Randy Schouten.
