James D. Baucum

James D. Baucum passed away on August 29, 2026 in Salt Lake City due to natural causes. The family patriarch was born on August 30, 1929 in Jacksonville, Texas to Delma and Lulu Mae Baucum. Raised in west Texas, he married Patricia J. Miller in 1950. From this union are two sons, Stephen James and Michael Grant and then a daughter, Lori Dianne. Grandsons are Adam and Austin, followed by great grandson Maddix James.

After graduation from Texas Tech with a BS degree in Geology, James was employed by Humble Oil (Exxon Mobil) in 1951 as an Oil Scout for a span of 40 years. A company record was set for an employee not missing a day’s work during this length of time. He subsequently took early retirement in 1991, becoming a consultant in oil and gas that included royalties, working intent and leased properties, etc. James’ career included Texas, Arkansas, The Rocky Mountain States and Nevada, while with Exxon Mobile to Salt Lake City in 1968. During his professional career he was elected as President of the Four Corners Oil Scouts and later the Rocky Mountain West Oil Scouts. In Salt Lake City he was honored to be elected as President of the Utah Association of Petroleum and Mining Landmen.

James was a member of Risen Life Church for over 50 years.

He is survived by his wonderful wife of 76 years, his children, grandchildren and great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his dearly beloved son Stephen James Baucum and his grandson Adam James Baucum.

James specifically requested there be no funeral or celebration of life. Burial will be held in West Texas at a later date.
