James Maurice Crane (Jim), beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 30, 2025, at the age of 83.
Jim was born to James Ray Crane and Frances Emma Crane Rasmussen and grew up with a love of family, sports, and adventure. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1960, where he excelled as a multi-sport athlete. He set school records in high jumping and high hurdles, and his high jump record stood for four years. He also enjoyed playing tennis, basketball, and baseball, and during his service in the United States Air Force, he participated in boxing.
After his military service, Jim earned his degree from Salt Lake Community College in 1972. He went on to build a successful 36-year career with L3 Communications, retiring as a Program Manager responsible for the Global Hawk Aircraft Program.
Jim was passionate about mentoring young athletes and spent years coaching youth sports. He coached Ute Conference Football for five years, leading his teams to state championships in his first two seasons. He also coached Sandy Little League Baseball and youth basketball, inspiring his players with his dedication, leadership, and love of the game.
Beyond his professional and coaching accomplishments, Jim found joy in the outdoors. He loved boating, fishing, camping, and exploring trails in his Jeep, the “DRTDVL.” His adventurous spirit, sense of humor, and generous heart created lasting memories for all who knew him.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James Ray Crane; his mother, Frances Emma Crane Rasmussen; his son, James Michael Crane; his daughter, Sandra Lee Crane Bustos; and his first wife, Martha Jean Davenport Crane.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Diana Maizland Crane; stepdaughters Penny Cavender, Nicole (Dennis) Garduno, and Lesley (Curt) Mascaro; grandchildren McKenzie, Mykelle, Cordero, Courtney, Wendy, Christen, Kaci, Keri, Chase, Dani, Kaden, and Talon; and 24 great-grandchildren who brought him endless pride and joy.
