Janet Bateman Manwaring

Janet Bateman Manwaring, 90, passed away on April 14, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Janet was born in Logan, Utah on October 17,1935 and spent her young life in Logan before moving with her family to Salt Lake City around the age of 10. Janet was the seventh of the eight children of Edward Allen Bateman and Orrel Emma Greenwood Bateman. Edward Allen Bateman was the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Utah from 1945 until his death in 1960. Janet graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City and then went on to Utah State University. After her graduation from Utah State University, she taught high school English at East High School in Salt Lake City for several years before marrying Max Garrett Manwaring (1932-2025) in August 1959. Upon marrying in 1959 Janet and Max left Utah for an adventurous life in Tacoma, Washington; Champaign, Illinois; Rio de Janeiro Brazil; Platteville, Wisconsin; Memphis, Tennessee; Panama City, Panama; Washington, DC; and Carlisle, Pennsylvania; before finally returning to Salt Lake City about 10 years ago upon Max’s “sorta” retirement.

During her years in Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Panama Janet continued to teach high school English and was loved by her many students and colleagues on faculty – as well as support Max’s career in academia, the military, and the defense, state, and intelligence communities in Washington which took him across the world for much of their live together. In addition to teaching high school English Janet also spent many years over the many places she and Max lived teaching Seminary, Sunday School, and Relief Society in her various wards throughout her life and was know as a great teacher and an outspoken advocate for strong public education – always being full of life, energy, and creativity!

During all this Janet had three children with her husband Max. A daughter, Susan Kay Manwaring (deceased), and two sons, Alan Dogulas Manwaring and Paul Bateman Manwaring. Janet has two wonderful grandchildren, Sienna Montana Manwaring, and Will Shumway Manwaring who in the twilight of her life were the joy of her life!

Janet is the last surviving child of her parents’ eight children and has many dear nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews, from both her side and Max’s side of the family, spread throughout the world who will miss her greatly.

Janet’s funeral will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 11:00 am at the LDS Capitol Hill ward building located at 413 W Capitol Street in Salt Lake City, Utah. There will be a viewing on Friday, May 8 from 6-8p and right before the service on Saturday, May 9 from 10-10:45 am, both at the Capitol Hill ward building. Janet will be interned at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park on Monday, May 11, right next to her husband Max.
