Joan Sargent

Our Mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Joan May Ridge Sargent, age 91, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2023 in Ogden, Utah with her family by her side.

Joan was born May 26, 1931 to Glenn Ridge and Nell Peterson Ridge in Park City, Utah. She joined her older sister, Betty Jean, and older brother, William (Bill), who was her partner in crime.

Joan’s father, Glenn, worked for the Union Pacific Railroad which in turn moved her family many places in her childhood. Echo, Utah however, eventually became home.

Growing up in Echo, Joan was able to hop trains, ice skate, climb the ledges and attend North Summit High School where she was the drum majorette and played the French horn in the band. She loved her class of 1949 and always looked forward to the class reunions as she cherished her friendships with classmates.

Joan married Carl L. Sargent in Hoytsville, Utah on September 23, 1950 which was where they settled and raised their family, Paul, Gale, Sally, and Carla. Joan was known as a hard worker and spent many hours on the farm in Hoytsville and at many various jobs. Later in her life she went to work at Brown’s Dairy as their bookkeeper. She was later hired with Utah Power and Light where she retired as a customer service representative.

When not working hard on the farm or at home, Joan loved to go dancing. We heard many stories about her dance nights all over Summit, Morgan and Wasatch Counties. She always had a great story about many things in life and you were always entertained. She was an active member of BPW and the American Legion and held many leadership positions with these organizations. She loved her country and was very patriotic. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Primary for many years.

Joan and Carl had a small home in St. George, Utah and she loved spending the winter months there. This conveniently put her only 37 miles from the Nevada border and we always teased her about her part-time job over in Mesquite. She always reassured us that she only played the penny slots!!

Joan always welcomed you in her home and she saw to it you never left hungry. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was affectionately known as Grandma Jo.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carl, her daughter, Carla Sargent, daughters-in-law Star Sargent and Deanna Sargent, her parents and siblings. She is survived by the following: Paul Sargent (son), Gale Sargent (son), Sally (Grant) Piercy (daughter), six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

We owe so much gratitude for the loving care mom has received over the past few years and would like to give a special thanks to Rory (Doc), her home health care nurse, and Jeanette Vernon, who were always available and willing to help in many ways as well as the Family Tree Staff and residence, Chris Vernon, Frankie and Glen Brown, Bishop Michael Brown and family.
