John William Johnson Jr.

John William Johnson Jr. passed away peacefully in his home on July 9, 2026. Though he faced health complications later in life, he endured well to the very end, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born at home in Copperton, Utah, on September 2, 1943, to Maxie Lea and John William "Bill" Johnson, he was known by everyone in town as “Johnny.” A natural athlete, he spent his youth playing sports, including baseball and basketball for the Bingham Miners, where he helped clinch their first high school basketball state championship in 1960.

His athletic talents took him to BYU for his freshman year, he then transferred to the College of Southern Utah to play both basketball and baseball for the T-Birds. John graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business/Accounting and became a Certified Public Accountant. After working for a few different organizations, he joined Med One Capital, where he served as CFO until his retirement in 2007.

Though he accomplished much in his career, John’s greatest joy began when he married his high school sweetheart, Claudia Butterfield, in the Salt Lake Temple on June 12, 1964. The couple recently celebrated 62 beautiful years of marriage.

Together, they were blessed with five children: Brad, Suzette, Stacy, Travis, and Corey. From the moment their children arrived, life was all about family. John created a lifetime of unforgettable memories, whether they were camping at Fish Lake, pheasant hunting in Roosevelt and South Dakota, or taking family vacations to Arizona and Disneyland.

He cared deeply about education, never missed a parent-teacher conference, and taught his kids to work hard and respect others. He was also his children's biggest fan; whether he was coaching the team or cheering from the stands, he never missed a game.

John had a natural gift for showing kindness and easily made friends wherever he lived. He called West Jordan home for 57 years, truly loving his neighbors and building friendships that lasted a lifetime.

John is a dedicated disciple of Jesus Christ and a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent his life quietly serving others with a willing heart. Whether he was teaching Primary children, working with the youth, or serving as a Bishop, he always led with love and humility.

John’s loving influence lives on through his beautiful family. He is survived by his cherished wife, Claudia; his children, Brad (Shannon), Suzette, Stacy (Blake) Allen, Travis (Jill), and Corey (Shari); 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, with two more eagerly expected this August. He is also survived by his dear sister, Bobbie Lee (Ron) Thurgood. He was preceded in death by his loving parents and in-laws Ross and Marjorie Butterfield.

We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Active Hospice. A special thanks to Jade, Wilbern, Caitlyn, Zac, Hilary, and Chaplain Tiffany for their tender care and love.
