John Egbert Krogh

John Egbert Krogh, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on August 19, 2026, at the age of 91. He leaves behind a lifetime of extraordinary service and a family who will miss his love, laughter, and steady presence more than words can express.

John was born on June 23, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to John Peter and Ida Egbert Krogh. He grew up in Salt Lake City, quickly learning the value of working hard, having fun, building integrity, and exemplifying devotion to family. John graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City in 1953. Shortly after, he was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Samoa. He served for 21⁄2 years from 1955 to 1958, working very hard to learn the language; so much so that he was still speaking and reading fluently at the end of his life.

Following his missionary service, John married his eternal sweetheart, Karen Maxwell Krogh, on June 22, 1959, in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity. Together they built a home centered on faith, devotion, and joy, and were blessed with 6 children: Macae Wanberg (Kelly), Kimberly Gumucio (David), Benjamin Krogh (Lori), Frank Krogh (Daina), Janelle Vorkink (Lee), and Kelly Swasey (Kevin).

An avid scholar and educator, John pursued higher education with boundless curiosity and discipline. After initial studies at the University of Utah, he earned his bachelor's degree in physical therapy from USC in 1964. He then attended BYU, receiving a PhD in Zoology in 1971. A gifted instructor, he taught anatomy at the University of Utah and served as the first director of its new Physical Therapy program for three years. He went on to teach anatomy in the Physician Assistant program at Wichita State University before finally joining the faculty at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM), where he conducted research and taught anatomy over two decades (1976-1998). After retirement he continued his dedication to medical education by serving as a Dean of the Utah area for med student rotations. During this time he found he missed teaching so he taught several classes at Provo College. He miraculously survived a horrific plane crash in 2004 and we are grateful for the additional 22 years we cherished with him.

A faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, John served willingly throughout his life in many church callings, including Sunday School and youth teacher, Scoutmaster, seminary teacher, high councilor, and Bishop in two different wards. His leadership was defined by steadfast testimony and genuine care for everyone he ministered to.

Throughout his life John was known for his loving kindness, devoted ministering, work ethic, consistent scripture study, and sense of humor. He valued physical fitness and continued a daily routine for many years as well as authoring and illustrating several exercise books. He especially enjoyed playing sports, following BYU football, woodworking, gardening, hunting, stone masonry, bottling his infamous vegetable juice, BYU basketball, boating, and anything related to Samoa. He and Karen served three Samoan missions together in retirement: Apia, Pago Pago, and Spanish Fork, Utah.

Above all, John treasured his family. He is survived by his devoted wife Karen of 67 years, his 6 children, 33 grandchildren, 48+ great-grandchildren, and an adoring sister, Lothield. He was preceded in death by parents, his sister Patricia Wolf, his son-in-law David Gumucio, and granddaughter Angelina Gumucio.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 12 pm at the South Chapel located at 65 West 800 South in Mona, Utah, 84645. A viewing will precede the funeral at 10:00 am. Always a teacher, there will be no interment as John arranged for his body to be donated to the medical school lab where he taught.

Those who knew and loved John will forever remember him for his attention to the individual, his abiding faith, as well as his humble, determined nature. His earthly life was a treasure.
