Jose Eusebio "Joe" Madrid, Jr., age 91, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, in Riverton, Utah. Born on April 17, 1935, in Dixon, New Mexico, Joe was deeply proud of his New Mexican roots and the rich heritage that shaped his life. He also greatly loved his family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
From 1955 to 1958, Joe served honorably as an Airman First Class in the United States Air Force. Stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas; England; and Spain, he worked as a Turret Systems Mechanic. While stationed in England during a tense period of global history, Joe played a critical role in pre-flighting and post-flighting planes carrying atomic bombs as part of preparations for potential nuclear conflict with Russia. He took great pride in his service to his country.
Joe dedicated his professional career to the California Department of Transportation as an Electrical Engineer. Through years of hard work and commitment, he rose to the position of Superintendent II over the San Francisco Bay area. His contributions to the field were marked by a steadfast dedication to excellence and service.
Joe’s love for family was central to his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara (Modesto); son Mark Madrid; daughter Marina Money; stepdaughter Angelina Carranco; grandchildren Kimber Starling (Jarret Hamblin), Caralee (Benjamin) Young, Ricardo "Ricky" Madrid, Karina (Alex) Kofford, Maureen "Betsy" Madrid, Thomas "Tommy" Madrid, and Adam Madrid Money; great-grandchildren Bridget Gillespie, Elizabeth and Victoria Young, and Dazen and Ava Kofford; step-grandson Joey Akin; step-great-grandsons Takeo and Gabriel Belmar; sister Margo Henderson; and brother William Mariani.
He was preceded in death by his father Jose Eusebio Madrid Sr., mother Francis Ermalindra Romero, older sister Teresa Madrid Prada, and step-daughter, Joann Akin.
Joe cherished his New Mexican heritage and spent much of his life exploring and sharing stories about his ancestry. He traced his lineage back to Francisco Madrid of Spain, who arrived with the conquistadors to Mexico before settling in New Mexico. His passion for genealogy brought countless stories about his forefathers and their role in the settlement of New Mexico. Joe also held a special bond with his extended family—particularly his double-cousins from the Romero-Madrid lines—with whom he shared many fond memories of childhood adventures (including one infamous incident involving accidentally burning down his grandparents' barn).
Joe’s legacy is one of devotion—to family, heritage, country, and career. His memory will live on through those who loved him and through the stories he so passionately preserved.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
