Lila Joyce Pugsley Hummel

Upon completion of a long and wonderful life, Lila Joyce Pugsley Hummel, 97, passed away peacefully in her home in Sandy, Utah on June 1, 2024. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, the second daughter of Albert and Lila Beatrice (Bleak) Pugsley.

In her early years, much time was spent visiting aunts and uncles and forming close bonds with her cousins. She loved her cousins! During the summers, Joyce would go to her cousin’s house on a farm. It is there she learned how to ride a horse, gather eggs, churn butter and other miscellaneous farm chores. Growing up, Saturdays were a big event when she would ride the streetcar downtown with her mother and sister Thelma, go to a double feature movie and munch on a small bag of candy corn purchased from the Kress Department Store. Afterwards, they would eat lunch followed by ice cream.

Upon graduating from South High School, she went to the University of Utah where she was involved in the Phi Mu sorority and earned her bachelor's degree in family and childhood development which proved helpful while rearing her children. After college, she married the love of her life, Robert Arnold Hummel. They were married on June 29,1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they built a family of faith and a life of hard work mixed with play.  She was devoted to family and building good memories. Joyce made mothering and homemaking look easy!

Joyce served in many church callings and leadership positions including Primary President, Relief Society President, and Relief Society teacher. The calling she loved the most was teaching the Beehives. She also served missions on Temple Square, the Historic Site mission in St George, and a member locator mission, all along with her husband.

In her 60’s she joined a group called The Clogging Grandmothers and would frequently travel around the valley to perform at various events. They even performed at the Festival of Trees. This was something that she thoroughly enjoyed and would proudly brag about. Joyce loved to play cards, entertain friends and family, paint, travel, sew, quilt, write poetry, take pictures, do handwork, golf, make bead bracelets to share, put together puzzles, and play the piano and organ. She was never idle. Even up until her 94th year she was canning chili sauce from home-grown tomatoes.

People seemed to be drawn to her because of her kind and gentle demeanor.  Needless to say, she had many, many friends and a great posterity! She will be dearly missed!

Joyce is survived by her four children Craig (Gypsy) Hummel, Richard (Tammy) Hummel, Diane (Phillip) Sayer, and Peggy (Robert) Hoffman. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 73 years and only sister Thelma Wixom.

She is adored by her 18 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren and is leaving behind a legacy of service, love, and faith in Jesus Christ.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday June 11th, from 9:00 am – 10:40 am at the Mt Jordan 2nd Ward, 9351 South 300 East, Sandy, Utah. Services will follow at 11:00 am.  Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park at 3401 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City 84106.
