Martha Louise Newton, known throughout her life as Louise, was born January 14, 1951, in Douglas, Arizona, to Sterling Leo Newton and Laura Martha (Lewis) Newton. She passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, on her 75th birthday.
Louise grew up in Douglas, Arizona, in a home filled with family history and strong faith. Shortly after her parents married, they purchased the home that had once belonged to Louise’s maternal grandparents—the very house in which her mother had been born—giving Louise a deep sense of heritage and continuity. She was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended the Douglas Ward, where her grandfather, Joseph P Lewis, had previously served as branch president.
As a young woman, Louise faced a serious illness that left her gravely ill near the end of her senior year of high school. After extensive medical treatment and a prolonged hospitalization at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, she made a miraculous recovery. This experience strengthened her faith and shaped the quiet determination with which she lived the remainder of her life.
Louise later served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Virginia Roanoke Mission from January 1974 to July 1975. She attended Brigham Young University, earning a bachelor’s degree in education, and taught elementary school in Utah, Connecticut, and Arizona. She also worked as a technician for twelve years at the Utah State Hospital until injuries sustained in a patient attack prevented her from continuing her employment.
Louise was known for her gentleness, kindness, and deep devotion to her faith. She lived a life of quiet obedience, daily prayer, gratitude, and love for the gospel, enduring ongoing health challenges with patience and trust in the Lord.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving siblings and their families: Lewis Newton (Dianne); Richard Newton (Julie); David Newton (Amanda); Sharon Miller; Laura Ball (Robert); Marcia Cahoon (George); Gina Kirkwood (Brian); Sterling Cahoon (Danielle); Troy Cahoon (Heidi); Jeffrey Cahoon (Thomas); Coralee Cahoon (Tim); Coreen Egbert (Phillip); Megan Lee (Chanki); Joseph Newton (Tawnia); Shanelle Newton (Brad); Alex Newton (Elizabeth); Edward Newton; Mitch Newton; Paul Newton; and Lamar Newton (Eileen), along with many extended family members whom she loved dearly.
