Merle Mickelsen Whitlock, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on July 6, 2023, at her daughter’s home. Merle was born in Redmond, Utah, on September 16, 1932, to Arthur Charles Mickelsen and Christy Marie Breinholt. She married the love of her life, Curtis LaMar Whitlock on December 29, 1950. They enjoyed many happy years together before he passed in 2017. Merle and LaMar created a loving home where they raised three children and nurtured all who gathered there. Merle loved unconditionally and was cherished by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, whether entertaining on her patio or at her St. George home. Merle taught us to always build relationships and invest in family and friendships. She enjoyed a good laugh and had the fantastic ability to find the comedy in any story. Merle was a fabulous cook and was known for her delicious chocolates, sugar cookies, and cinnamon rolls. Cooking for her was a demonstration of her love. She always remained active and enjoyed walking, bowling, golfing, and cheering on her beloved Utah Jazz. Merle made beautiful quilts that provided warmth and comfort not only to her family, but to hundreds of others as she donated them to many charities, including Primary Children’s Hospital. She was a role model to her family of service, gratitude, and patience.
Merle is survived by her children Brad (Pam), Riverton; Lisa (Brian), Murray; and McRae (Kristin), Bountiful; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law LeVoy Whitlock (Shirley), Helena, MT, and Shelby Noland, Scipio, UT. She is preceded in death by her husband LaMar and her siblings Marcella Hansen, Que Mickelsen, Derreld Mickelsen, Veone Kelson, and Colleen Nielsen.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, beginning at 11:00 am at Goff Mortuary (8090 S State Street, Midvale, UT). A viewing will be offered prior to funeral services from 9:00–10:45 am. Interment will be at the West Jordan Cemetery (7800 S 1300 W).
