Reynold N. Astle

Reynold N. Astle, 89, passed away June 2, 2024 in Herriman, Utah. Born March 30, 1935 in Grover, Wyoming (Star Valley) to Ralph Alma and Norma Nield Astle. He was the oldest of four children; Paul, Drylee (Ralph) Goff and Vickie (Scott) Lowder.

His family moved to Draper, Utah where he attended Draper Junior High and made many life-long friends. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1954 and married Marilyn Nuffer on Sept. 8, 1954. They were the parents of four children; Sherree Hunsaker, Kelvin (Camille) Astle, Bradley (Robin) Astle and Sidnee Astle. Later divorced.

Reynold married Faun Nelson on February 14, 1970 in Elko, Nevada. They were later sealed in the Jordan River Temple on August 1, 1992. Faun previously had three children; Cynthia Lovendahl, Michael (Roseann) Chappell and Scott (Marlynn) Chappell whom Reynold called his own. Reynold and Faun had two children; Jennifer (Corwin) Higley and Jeffery (Stephanie) Astle.

Reynold worked at the Kennecott Copper Mine as a heavy equipment operator retiring in 1985 after 30 years. He worked at Cardwell Oil as warehouse manager for 25 years before retiring to be a full-time caregiver to Faun in 2010.

Reynold was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-say Saints. He lived in his home in Sandy, Utah for 51 years and was part of the Midvale East 5th Ward. He served as a Cub Scout Leader, Young Men’s President, Executive Secretary, High Priest Group Leader, Stake High Councilor, and Stake Sunday School Counselor. He also served in the Jordan River Temple as a veil worker for many years.  After suffering health issues, he made his home with his daughter Jennifer and family in West Jordan for almost 3 years before moving to the Beehive Home where he spent his last 4 months.

Reynold was always busy working at something, he never stopped! He enjoyed spending time with his family; his favorite family times were camping, fishing, and getting together for the holidays and birthdays. He loved working in his yard and had beautiful prized roses and spent a lot of time in his vegetable garden. Family and neighbors were the recipients of his over abundance of vegetables. He thrived on serving and being involved in his ward and stake with many dear friends. He would have given the coat off his back if needed and did give very generously when he could. Reynold loved his children and grandchildren and spending time with them. He was so patient and loving and never said no to persistent grandkids. He could spoil them rotten! But we wouldn’t have had it any other way. He was an avid fan of the NBA and loved watching the Utah Jazz games and also the NFL Kansas City Chiefs. He has a special little dog; Cooper, who he rescued from the shelter at a lonely time of life and they became best buds and really, “who rescued who?”

Reynold is survived by 8 children, 24 grand-children, 43 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faun; brother Paul; nephew Ricky; brother-in-law Ralph; and step-daughter Cynthia.

Many thanks to the staff at the Beehive Home of Herriman and Coene, RN, Shelly, RN, Nikki, and Jaxson from Aspire Hospice for their loving care of dad.

It’s so very difficult to sum up a great man’s life and influence in such few words, but we were honored and blessed to have had such a wonderful dad and grandpa. His love and example will carry on in our lives and hearts forever. Till we meet again dad! We love you!
