Shirley Brooks Phelps

Shirley Brooks Phelps, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, returned to her heavenly home Friday, March 17, 2023 at the age of 90. Shirley was born May 29, 1932 in her childhood home of Hoytsville, UT where she was welcomed by her parents, Reed and Ione Winters Brooks and older siblings Jack and Rita.

She graduated from North Summit High School in 1950 and then moved to Salt Lake City where she began her job cutting blinds for a local department store. There she met her beloved husband, George. They married shortly after on May 29, 1951 and then moved to Ogden, UT where they began working at Hill Air Force Base.

In 1958, they adopted their first daughter, Lois. In the following years they adopted two more children, Larry (1963) and Carol (1966). They moved back to Hoytsville in 1974 where Shirley began editing the Summit County Bee Newspaper and raising her children.

Shirley loved quilting, poetry, playing cards at Seniors, genealogy and spending time with family. She spent many committed years serving at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, mother and father, brother and sister, daughter Lois, and two grandsons, Mathew and Joshua.

She is survived by her children, Larry and Carol, 14 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren and many other family and friends whom she loved.

The family would like to thank Enhabit Home Care and Hospice and her grand-daughter, Tasha, for their kind and loving care over the past few weeks.

By Shirley’s wishes, there will be a graveside service only, at the Hoytsville Cemetery on Thursday, March 23rd at 12 pm.
