Thomas Owen Troop, 80, passed away on Nov 11, 2025 in South Jordan, Utah. He was born March 8, 1945 in Tooele, Utah to Erma Martin and Paul I. Troop. Thomas was married to Opal Hunter on August 18, 1967 in the Salt Lake Temple. He spent most of his professional life in the service of the State of Utah as a correctional officer. As the Utah State Prison armorer, he was skilled as a trainer and rangemaster. His responsibility to his craft and his interest in knowledge allowed him to learn from industry leaders in weaponry and chemical agents.
Thomas loved sports from a young age, playing football and basketball at Murray High School. He spent time with his uncles as a youth helping on a mink farm, and hunting when he wasn’t causing mischief of some sort. He spent two years in the Lord’s service as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Leeds, England. He then enlisted in the national guard where he served for 10 years, as a weekend warrior.
Aside from his professional life, he was a husband and father of three children, Jennifer, Richard, and Marshel. He and Opal opened their home to many others as foster parents. He was often seen at the ballpark or on the hardwood coaching youth sports teams both for church and recreationally. He served in many areas in church, including the bishopric. His interests included playing card games like canasta and pinochle, watching John Wayne films and sports on TV. Whether the Yankees, the Jazz, the Colts or the University of Utah were on, he would find an opportunity to take it in.
He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Jennifer and Jeff Darcy; Richard and Amy; and Marshel and Ginalanya. His grandchildren are Brett, Jessica, Hope, and Mikell Darcy; Drayton and Logan Troop; Luci, Ciera, Austin, Rhyker, and Addie Troop; and great-grandchild Austin Darcy.
Preceded in death by his mother Erma and father Paul. He spent the last 16 years widowed, as Opal passed in 2009.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State St., Midvale. A graveside service will be on Thursday, December 4th at 11:00 am at Sandy City Cemetery, 700 East 9000 South, Sandy.
