Tom Cyrus Mellenthin

Tom Cyrus Mellenthin was born July 2nd, 1942, to Harriet Eugenia Vawdrey and Tom Rudolph Mellenthin. If asked, he would say he was older than dirt. Tom lived in Draper almost all of his life and was consistently active in the community. He graduated from Jordan High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Math and Computer Science in 1970, from the University of Utah. He was married in 1963 to Marion Schmidt in the Manti Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Marion and Tom had four children together and he loved to spend time camping and going on vacation with his family whenever possible.

Tom served faithfully in many church callings, Scout leader being among his favorites.

He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years. Eventually, he earned his Silver Beaver and was presented with the District Award of Merit twice. With his pack he did many projects including building a pinewood derby track that even Red Green would be proud of.

He worked at Litton Industries as a Senior Test Engineer and Systems Analyst for over 30 years.

He volunteered on the master plan committee for Draper City, as chairman of planning and zoning, and chairman of the board of adjustments. He was proud of his civil service and was always very involved in Draper City. Tom was the creator of the Draper Spook Alley put on by The Lions club and recruited his children as well as his many scouts to be a part of it. This was one of his favorite things and the tradition is carried on today by some of his children.

After retiring, Tom was able to continue enjoying rock hounding as well as do paleontological work with the Utah Friends of Paleontology, helping to uncover monumental findings. (Because he remembered where he buried them). Notably, he helped to unearth and prepare a Mammoth Tusk and a Utah Raptor humerus.

Tom was also part of the Great Salt Lake Wood Carvers at Wheeler Farm. He won numerous awards at the State Fair for his many wood carvings. His house and wood shop are full of different projects that he had worked on that he loved to show off and give away.

He’s known for having a Diet Coke in one hand and holding his wife's hand with the other. You could always catch Tom driving around in his Jeep, going on walkabouts, and impromptu road trips. He loved calling himself Uber Tom, driving the missionaries around, and was ready at a moment's notice when needed.

He is survived by his wife Marion Mellenthin, half-brother Michael Mellenthin, his childrenRandy Mellenthin (Vicki), Roger Mellenthin (Millie), Brian Mellenthin (Melanie), and Mindy Ulibarri (Craig), 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
